Guwahati: Rukminigaon Flyover Ready to Open Tomorrow, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma to Inaugurate
Residents of Guwahati are all set to receive a major traffic relief as the long-awaited Rukminigaon flyover will be inaugurated on July 6, 2025. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is scheduled to open the flyover officially, marking another important step in Assam’s growing infrastructure development.
The flyover, built at a length of about 650 metres, will directly benefit thousands of people who travel daily between Dispur and Six Mile. This stretch often faces huge traffic jams, especially during office hours. With the flyover now ready, it is expected to ease congestion not just at Rukminigaon but also in nearby areas like Ganeshguri and Beltola.
What’s making headlines is not just the opening, but the pace at which the project was completed. Work on the flyover began in October 2024, and within just nine months, it was fully constructed. The total cost came up to nearly ₹111 crore, including ₹88 crore for the main contract and the rest for final touches and related works. That kind of speed and delivery is rare in public infrastructure projects and has earned appreciation from many.
Local residents have seen busy activity for months—cranes, labourers, construction materials, and constant noise became part of daily life in Rukminigaon. Now that the flyover is complete, commuters are eagerly looking forward to smoother, quicker travel through the area.
However, the construction did not come without criticism. To make way for the structure, several roadside trees were cut down. This led to strong opposition from environmental groups and nature lovers in the city. They expressed concerns about the loss of green cover, calling it a price paid for development. Despite the protests, the work went ahead and the government maintained that the project was crucial for the city’s growing traffic needs.
As Guwahati continues to expand and urbanise, projects like this are seen as necessary to keep up with rising demands. The Rukminigaon flyover is one more addition to the city’s network of overpasses that aim to improve connectivity and reduce delays.
With the opening ceremony just a day away, all eyes are on the flyover that promises faster movement, less congestion, and a bit more ease for the daily commuter. Whether it also inspires future projects to be built with both speed and sustainability remains a question to be answered in the days ahead.
