Meghalaya: Curfew imposed, Internet service suspended in Shillong

GUWAHATI: Curfew was imposed in Shillong and its adjoining areas late on Friday and mobile internet services were suspended in six districts after a member of Khasi Students Union was killed in a clash with suspected illegal migrants in the Ichamati area, East Khasi Hills.

A notification issued by M War Nongbri, District Magistrate of East Khasi Hills District, Meghalaya said, “Information has been received that there is apprehension of serious deterioration of law and order in Shillong agglomeration and adjoining areas.”
Areas to be under Curfew include whole of Municipal Area, Cantonment area, all areas under Mawlai Block including Census Town, all areas under Mawpat Block including Census town, areas under Mylliem Block from Umshyrpi Bridge up to 7th Mile Upper Shillong, Madanrting, Mawbei, Laitkor, Nongkseh, Umlyngka, Lawsohtun, Mawdiangdiang, Diengiong, Siejiong.

As per sources, the clash started a few days ago after various organizations, led by KSU took to the streets demanding inner-line permit (ILP) to safeguard Meghalaya against infiltration by illegal migrants.
