18 month old child infected with ‘Black Fungus’

Jaipur: An 18 month old child has been infected with Black fungus or Mucormycosis in Rajasthan’s Bikaner. This is the first ever reported case of Black Fungus disease in infants in India. India has been experiencing a surge in the number of Black Fungus disease, a very rare phenomenon, now appearing as a post Covid-19 complication.

Caused by a group of moulds known as mucormycetes present naturally in the environment, the black fungus spreads through the nose and affects other parts of the body such as the eyes.

People with weakened immunity due to COVID-19, diabetes, kidney disease, liver or cardiac disorders, age-related issues, or those on medication for auto-immune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis are more likely to contract mucormycosis.

In Gujarat, a 15-year-old child was infected with Mucormycosis.

According to AIIMS Director Dr Randeep Guleria, some of the common symptoms of mucormycosis are one-sided facial swelling, headaches, nasal or sinus congestion, black lesions on nasal bridge or upper inside of the mouth that quickly become more severe, and fever.

He had also said that 90-95 per cent of patients getting infected by black fungus are either diabetic or taking steroids.

This infection is seen very rarely in those who are neither diabetic nor taking steroids, he had said.
