Assam By-elections underway, who will wear the winning smile?

Guwahati: The by-elections to five constituencies are underway in Assam as 31 candidates are in fray for polls, out of which eight are in each Gossaigaon and Bhabanipur LAC, six in Tamulpur, four in Mariani and five in Thowra LAC.

A total 7, 96,456 general electors will exercise their right to franchise, of which, 4, 03,374 are males; 3, 93,078 are females and 4 are transgender. Apart from these, there are also 3,165 service voters. 8, 864 electors are above 80 years of age and 4, 998 falls under the PwD category.

The voting process for the by-elections began at 7 am in the morning and will continue till 5 pm in the evening.

The constituency having the highest number of electors out of five constituencies is Tamulpur LAC having 2, 17,432 electors. The constituencies having the lowest number of electors is Thowra LAC having 1, 15,971 electors.

During this Assembly Bye-Election – 2021, a total of 5,410 polling personnel have been engaged and a total of 1, 869 Ballot Units (BUs); 1, 844 Control Unit (CUs) and 1, 861 VVPATs have been used.

Bengal and Bihar too began its elections this morning with voters reaching voting centres as early as 6 am to cast their votes. Four constituencies of Bengal will see the fate decided for some heavyweight candidates this season.

It will be a litmus test for BJP and Congress as heavyweight leaders stand against each other to wear that winning smile. The bye-elections were necessitated after BPF MLA of Gossaigaon and UPPL MLA of Tamulpur constituency died due to post Covid-19 complications and the MLAs of Thowra, Mariani and Bhabanipur switched to BJP.

After the assembly elections, Congress MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi of Mariani and Sushanta Borgohain of Thowra had resigned from the Congress party and joined the ruling BJP. In this bypoll, both former Congress MLAs Rupjyoti and Sushanta Borgohain are contesting on BJP tickets.
