DGP Kuladhar Saikia To Retire today

Assam Director General of Police (DGP), Kuladhar Saikia to get retirement today on November 30.

The Assam government gave an extension of three months to state Director General of Police (DGP), Kuladhar Saikia, just a day ahead of the final publication of the National Register of Citizens in Assam on August 30.

The top cop, who was slated to retire from his service on August 31 this year, got an extension after the appointments committee of the Central Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved to the proposal of the Union ministry of home affairs seeking extension of Saikia‘s service with additional three months considering it as a special case in the interest of public.

The 1985-batch IPS officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre was appointed as the Assam’s Director General of Police in April 2018.

Saikia, who happens to be a doctorate degree holder from the Indian Institute of Technology in Guwahati, has published nearly 20 short stories and also received the Sahitya Akademi Award for his story collection Akashar Chhabi Aru Anyanya Galpa in 2015.

Earlier, speculations were going on that a former All Assam Students Union (AASU) leader and Intelligence Bureau veteran, Tapan Deka, will take over as the new DGP of Assam Police after Saikia’s retirement.
