13 Cities to get its First 5G Internet Services in India

Digital Desk: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) announced that India will get its first 5G internet services by 2022. 

Thirteen cities in India will be receiving the first picks in getting these services. These cities include Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Gandhinagar, Gurugram, Hyderabad, Jamnagar, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai and Pune.

“These Metros and big cities would be the first places to launch 5G internet services in the nation next year,” the DoT stated on Monday. 

However, the government has not confirmed which telecom operator will be the first to commercially roll out 5G internet services. 

But sources stated that all the three leading telecom operators like Jio, Airtel and Vi (Vodafone Idea) have already set up test locations in these metropolis.

Moreover, DoT has collaborated with top research institutions to design and test 5G technology.

Some of these top institutes included in the Indigenous 5G trial research project include— Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur and a few others.

DoT also informed netizens regarding the cost of the project. It said, “Costing Rs 224 crore, the project is likely to be completed by December 31, 2021. It will pave the way for end-to-end testing of 5G (/topic/5g) User Equipments (UEs). This will also include network equipment by 5G (/topic/5g) stakeholders developing 5G (/topic/5g) products/services/use cases, including indigenous start-ups, SMEs, Academia and Industry in the country.”

Now that the 5G services are in the final testing process, the spectrum distribution will be vital in determining the commercial getaway of 5G in India.

The 5G internet services in India will provide a better experience for the users. It will bring higher download speed, connect several more varieties of devices than just smartphones. This initiative will take India one step closer towards making a nation highly equipped with technological development.
