Omicron scare: What is more important – UP Elections or Life?
Lucknow: India hit the 300 mark of Omicron cases on Thursday, taking the overall caseload of the new Covid variant to 341, reported the Health Ministry. Raising concerns on the sudden spike in the number of Covid cases due to the entry of the new Covid variant, Allahabad High Court has urged the Election Commission to postpone the upcoming Uttar Pradesh assembly elections (UP elections) by a month or two.
The Allahabad High Court has also urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ban election related gatherings, rallies in Uttar Pradesh, amid the rising fear of Omicron.

“If political rallies are not stopped ahead of the UP elections, then the scenario will be worse than the second wave,” Justice Shekhar Yadav said while making the observation on the prevailing pandemic situation of the country.
“Jaan hai toh Jahaan hai (if there is life, we have the world),” added Justice Yadav.
The High Court while making the observation, pointed out that there have been regular gatherings, crowds sighted where social distancing went for a toss, no masks seen being worn by the people. In such a situation, it won’t take much time for the infection spread faster and become more cumbersome for the health workers.
“Health experts have reported of a possibility of a third wave of Covid as the cases of the new variant Omicron continue to surge across the country,” the judge observed.

Pointing out news reports of the number of Covid cases, the judge further added, “The Bengal assembly elections and Gram Panchayat elections infected many due to the large gatherings and Covid protocols not being followed properly. It becomes difficult for the state as well as the health department to keep a check whether Covid protocols are being followed or not in such political rallies or gatherings considering the people are readying for the UP elections.”
Justice Yadav of the Allahabad High Court has urged the Election Commission to consider prohibiting rallies, gatherings of any kinds for the upcoming UP elections. “Rather, allow political parties to campaign through social media, Doordarshan or newspapers,” added the judge.

Political rallies, huge gatherings have always faced criticisms as such crowds have triggered massive infection spread. Already the new variant Omicron is rising steadily; there are concerns over pre-election political rallies turning into super-spreader events.
